Glasgow Velodrome
  • The velodrome has been in the news recently. It's now been given planning permission.

The 5000-seat National Indoor Sports Arena and 2000-seat cycling centre gets go-ahead

The £72m velodrome and stadium designed for the 2014 Commonwealth Games have been given the go-ahead by Glasgow city planners

Glasgow City Council today gave full planning permission to the 5000-capacity National Indoor Sports Arena (NISA) and 2000-seat cycling venue, designed by 3D Reid and Sports Concepts

The scheme also includes a community sports hall, offices, a café, four outdoor sports pitches, car parking and an 1km outdoor cycling track.

Councillor Archie Graham, executive member for the Commonwealth Games, said: “Gaining planning permission for the National Indoor Sports Arena and Velodrome means another major milestone in the Commonwealth Games journey has been reached.

“NISA will be a world-class building providing, not only a venue for some of the events at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, but also superb community sports facilities and a lasting legacy for Glasgow and Scotland.”

The outdoor cycling track is for road racing I think and might be used for a criterium league. That should be fun.
  • lol, are we surprised an essential part of the already confirmed games got permission to be built though?

No surprise. It just gives more of an idea of when it'll be ready.

sometime before 2014 would be nice but prob only just as all the construction workers are back in poland building the stadia for the Euro's in 2012.
  • Hey Rusty, do you have any info on the Glasgow velodrome? I can only find the council stuff referring to who won the contract to build it. When will it be ready for us to book a weekly session?
  • Supposedly it will be built by Summer 2012. Though all the dates are falling behind already.

It's been delayed. It was due to be finished in March 2010 but it's now running 21 months behind schedule so it'll be ready by December 2011
  • Out of interest, who's looking forward to using the track?

I've never cycled on a track but have always wanted to. My Dad in the 60's held the 1k record in South Africa. 1m06s (apparently) and was only broken in the late 70's (apparently).

So i guess i've always had a voice in my head telling me to give it a go.

I can imagine it'd be easy to get a group together to form a team from the forum?

    Discuss.......
  • I need to get out a bit more and get fit again but f/when I manage that and if I'm even still in Glasgow then I'd be up for giving it a go.
  • There's been plenty talk about getting a club team on the go with memberships and whatnot, dunno if I can be arsed with it but I really want to give the track a good go, so if it's a prerequisite for use then aye. The Bob is being built up with the intention of track legal bar the wheels which will be a purchase closer to opening time... If I am still in Glasgow by then anyway.

Like islipaway says. There's talk of an official club. I'm hoping we wont need to be british cycling affiliated to race in the track league because then our only costs are a team kit. When the track is coming together I'll try and make sure that we're well represented and get a good amount of time on the track for training. I'm literally shitting myself with excitement about it.
  • Hey Andy/Rusty,

Do you have concise velodrome rules on frames, cranks, wheels etc? I've looked but couldn't find much. Also, things like track etquette and commonly used track jargon are a mystery to me.

    cheers

Oh yes. I do indeed. I posted a thread here a while ago.

  • much obliged
  • I think I'll use it once every so often for fun. would probably hire one of the bikes though, probably dolans?

Probably. I'm thinking of getting my bike in a suitable state for a ride on the boards once a week. Then maybe a while down the line I'll get a Dolan Pre cursa or Track Champion to build up with some nice track specific (not 700g steel bars) parts.
  • yeah, i am thinking about a geared roadie before a track bike :)

I've already got that sorted so for me the next big bike purchase will be a track-only bike.
  • are youse planning on joining a team or will they have open hours or what?
  • Start our own team? i like the idea of being underdogs, like "The Bad News Bears". We could be the ruffians that drink and smoke too much and win a few races against all the odds. Really piss off the velosnobs.
  • Yeah. We're planning on setting up a club. There will be open training but also clubs will be able to book the velodrome for training. We'll need a coach for that. Rabsda has expressed interest in training to become a coach.
  • I'd love to give riding on the velodrome a go but i don't think it'd be something i'd be dedicated enough to to build another bike or wheelset for.
Also doubt i'd be able to put enough time into it to get any good.
Plus i'd probably interact with the other riders in a similar way i did at polo. Will they be doing proper keirin?

It depends. I don't think it's an all too popular discipline with real trackies. Also, you need a derny for it (which they'll have, but might not always have a rider for it). It kind of depends on the track league. I'd quite like to set up a weekly keirin meet if it's possible but I think it'd cost £££ to get it set up and to sustain it.
  • I would love to ride the track and am hoping that my wee boy (who is 8) wil be the next Sir Chris Hoy - he has no excuses , a covered track withing 20 miles of the house ! Sprinter's Genes from me (read FAT) !!! - what is the official timescale ?

It's as I said earlier in another thread. It was meant to be March 2010 but it'll now be December 2011. That was in The Telegraph earlier in the week. Hopefully it'll be earlier than December 2011 but I doubt it. Perhaps a Glasgowfgss christmas event at the velodrome would be on the cards. Velodrome opening, chug some cans, alleycat. Sounds good.
  • And renaming it the Graeme Obree Velodrome.

There's nothing like a good bit of vandalism on the opening day of a public building.
  • For sure. But I would only do it in a very middle class not actually damaging something way.
  • I've merged all of the recent velodrome chat into this thread to keep it all together.

I've just spent a little while pricing a Dolan Pre Cursa for when the track opens. The budget has grown slightly compared to what I'd imagined. That's what happens when you insist that Sugino 75s are the only suitable cranks. £950 is the final figure. Best start saving.
  • What wheelset?

I was thinking either the Campy Pista or something like that.

This is with the Navigator Pista wheelset. I'd probably go for the Planet X wheels if I was getting some nicer ones. They're £500. I'm not really sure if getting something like that is worth it. The aero advantage is great but then they're not great for training and they're not spectacular enough for racing. I'd quite like to get some cheap wheels and them eventually get a disc on the back and a five-spoke on the front (lots of money, I know).

Gigantex 50mm with Royce hubs and CX Ray spokes for £700. I actually think they are the same rims as the Planet X rims there, but nicer hubs and spokes.
  • Yep. The rims look the same. Same factory in Taiwan that churns them out. Great factory apparently. Very good QC.
  • I've just got a set of the road version of the PX50s. Not ridden them in anger yet but they seem well made with extremely smooth bearings.

My aim is to get a disk with a fixed/track conversion kit (Pro Lite probably) and either a 3 or 4 spoke Corima front. I'd then have perfect wheel choices for both TTs & velodrome.
  • Are any of you aware that its going to actually be named "Chris Hoy Velodrome"? Kind of lame, but deserving i suppose....
  • It should be The Graeme Obree Velodrome imho.

Yeah, this was talked about a while ago. I'd not think it'll be lame. I think it'll be one of these things where everyone just calls it "The Velodrome" or "The Glasgow Velodrome" if they're not from around here. It'll just be a name on the wall and something for the commentators to chat about at the commonwealth games.

It will be once Euan's done his business there.
  • Found out today, not only is there obviously the velodrome but there will be a decent closed road circuit outdoors (like Eastway & Hillingdon) at the new complex too.
Might be good for a fixed RR if it's reasonable to hire?

    Honestly cannot wait for both...
  • Yeah I kinda new about the road circuit a well. I can imagine someone will set up a winter league or something.
  • whats the deal with road circuits? a few miles long and lots of laps?
  • Yeah. Think of it as a crit. So 30/40/60 minute races depending on your cat.
  • Hopefully the circuit will be slightly longer than 1km.
I wonder if part of the groundworks will be used to create more of a testing circuit, it's not exactly blessed with hills where they are putting the velodrome.

Saying that though, I've seen a couple of races at Hillingdon and it doesn't really suffer from not having a major climb like Hog Hill (or Eastway did).

Surprised it's taken SC this long to try & build a specific off road tarmac circuit anywhere.
  • This is a bit late but I found this today.
  • i emailed them to ask if i could photograph the build at some point in the process. they said no

It might be possible to find someone who works on the project. Ask con artist if he knows anyone as he's in that business.
  • get a loan of a boiler suit and a hard hat and walk anywhere you want
  • This is a bit out of date but I only found out about the velodrome consequences today.

    [quote]
    The Evening Times:
Council leaders in Glasgow have been forced to bring forward more than £40million worth of planned cuts as a result of this week’s Budget.

The only firm details of where it could find some of the money over the next two years is via a reduction in running costs of the new Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and National Indoor Arena, both key to the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and the soon-to-be-opened Riverside Transport Museum.

The cuts could lead to shorter than anticipated opening hours, a reduction in the community facilities being provided at the arena, Monday closures for the museum or fewer staff at each facility.
