anybody recc one ,?i need to replace my one i use for work so it has to b capable of holding a flask ,box , gym kit and gen bike stuff ,iv got a few ones that are just too small ,im not sure about the messenger bag thing as iv never rode with one ,so an old style double shoulder strap rucksack prob ,not really fancy as its gona get a bit of wear and tear ,so hard wearing is best ,so any ideas or somebody selling one

Yeah that's quite cool. If you can get a postie's bag it's a reasonable way to try a messenger bag. I never really fancied them but they are more comfortable than they appear, easier to access without removing too if that matters, (and it does more than you'd think once you start doing it...)

If you're cycling a lot with it, then I'd reckon either a cycle specific one or a snowsports one. I use my girlfriend's Herchsel a lot - it is really nice, but the straps dig into your armpits if you're cycling. My dakine heli pro II doesn't, but it's not exactly subtle.

Check ebay for lowe alpine ones they are bomb proof had one for nearly 9 years and its still solid.

I have one of these. They're fairly cheap, very tough, and 100% waterproof. The pro-sports version has two big reflective strips down the back too. What you don't get is lots of compartments/pockets etc, but I'd recommend them if you want something tough and simple.

Here, didn't know about that mailroom supplies site. £25 aint bad for a bag either.
Other than being/knowing/mugging a postie, any consistent way to get a mail bag off the Royal Mail?
Also; ditching rucksack and using a shoulder/messenger bag was a move I'll never regret making. -

I'm the opposite. Still enjoy messenger bags but for regular use I'm a big fan of the quality backpack.

They're not keen on anyone other than posties having them. Papa McKay was a postman for 30 years, and even then I don't think they liked him having Royal Mail branded items at home. Though to be fair, people seem very trusting of someone dressed as a postman. During those snowstorms a few years back I wore a big waterproof RM coat on my walk home (the bike had been left at work). I was helping folk with their cars along the way, and everyone of them was convinced I was a real postman just because of the jacket. I think someone might have even written to the RM saying how dedicated this young postman had been, battling through the snow to deliver letters, haha.
Consistent way, don't think there is one. Easiest if you know someone, and even then it can be difficult as there would be stock numbers to account for.

I've been using an old Karrimor backpack for years now. Isn't waterproof in the slightest, but poly bags usually see to that.
I like the look of that Overboard one. -
I bought a 20lt Gourdon from Alpkit last year, totally waterproof, I use it regularly on my bike and as a daypack on the hill. I love it. My only critisism is no small external pocket, however I got round that by cliping one of their smaller rolltop bags into one side pocket and carry the bike lock in the other. Best £22.50 I've ever spent on a small rucksack, I doubt you'd regret getting one.

Yeah - I second the vote for the alpkit gourdon. For the price, it is an unbelievably good pack, comfortable and adaptable - and seam sealed, so nothing will get wet!

Really nice quality, decent capacity and is pretty comfy and secure when cycling. There's a few other Osprey ones in differing sizes, can't recommend them enough, a few of my family have them and they are all excellent quality. -
Im still using my Kriega r35 rucksack that i purchased for motorcycle duties 12 years ago (when they were originally called Krug). Keeps everything dry, plenty space and very robust. Not the cheapest option, but having used and abused mine for over a decade, its still as good as the day i bought it. Clever design touches too.

I use a Trakke courier bag for round town but I also have a Lowe Alpine Airzone 28 for longer rides when I don't want to have all the weight on one shoulder and/or saddlebag, pannier etc won't do. I used to have a fantastic Vaude rucksack but the zips slowly died a couple of years back. The Lowe Alpine is a great rucksack and the only thing I've found to come close to the Vaude. Great fit, hydration compatible, rain cover, light loop, helmet holder, big open front pocket for u-lock etc etc. I paid big £££ for it and it's been worth every penny but I see at least one place online where it's going (relatively) cheap justnow . . .
