Me and my girlfriend went to the Blochairn car boot sale last week.
We saw a guy trying to sell a Raleigh avanti and he stood out like a sore thumb and so did the bike as everything in the place in the way of bikes, looked like junk mainly.
Your typical underfed looking scumbag in his mid 30's approaching people with something you knew he could never have attained through legal channels.
We then about twenty minutes later, saw a man with a young boy who had obviously bought the bike from him.
We knew that someone had had this stolen from them but couldn't think of what to do.
I bet this was that bike.

  • Last week! Even if you didnt know what to do at the time, How the fuck did it take you so long to post it up on the forum!? completely renders this sort of thread useless!!
  • Hi guys,

If you could provide any other information about who bought the bike that would be helpful. Were there no police at the car boot sale? Did you not think to call them otherwise?

On the plus side at least this suggests the bikes are still in Glasgow. Maybe they'll turn up in a bike shop soon. Could do with mine as meant to be riding the Tour Series on Tuesday... Fuckers.

I have been busy working and dealing with many other things in my life and
I only check this forum every now and then.

    What info can I give?
Junkie guy, of which there was many at the place, standing with a bike. 5'7 with brown hair and looking underweight.
45 minutes later an older man about 65, 5'5 and a young kid about 12 with blonde hair walking with the bike through the market.

    Hindsight is a great thing.
I also had kids with me and I had to deal with them so sorry for not being responsible enough to have acted in the appropriate manner.

What exactly should I have said to the police?

  • Sorry if I've misunderstood but had you seen the post before you seen the bike?

If you have I would of called the police and said you have seen a bike which you belive to be stolen being sold.
  • I saw the post after I had seen the bike.
  • Haha That makes more sense now cheers for clearing that up.
  • Fucking scumbags these people.
I genuinely feel terrible for you and I'm sorry I didn't react.

Instead of blaming other people for their inaction, maybe you should be asking your friend how these scumbags managed to get a hold of his bikes in the first place?

Not trying to be cheeky but no matter where those bikes were kept they should have been appropriately locked, secured and insured. I mean you wouldn't leave your car uninsured and unlocked or just leave 5 grand cash just sitting around your flat would you?

I would also think it's a sad fact that even if he had phoned the police, they probably wouldn't have reacted quickly enough to have done anything anyway. I know from experience that these sorts of things are "low priority" for the police and it would have been the next day by the time they made it out to take a statement.

Maybe he could offer a reward and send out an email to local cycling clubs or if they weren't insured he could try at an event like Pedal For Scotland? I know it sounds desperate but those sorts of bikes would stick out like a sore thumb in Scotland and have to turn up eventually.
  • just reading this thread is fucking gutting. If I see these out and about i will let you know. Any photos so we can see the tape colour and shit?
  • Sorry for the misunderstanding thetonyblair. From reading your reply before I thought you had seen the post. Sorry about that. Hoping the bikes will turn up soon. I've notified all local bike shops and spread the word to most cycling clubs/racing cyclists in Scotland, as well as the police too.

    Cheers for the help guys
