  • So despite me wanting a track bike for my favourite bike ever, I think Ive buggered my left knee..

I went on the "Velodrome" in bellendhouston park yesterday just for 10 miles at between 18 and 22mph, which is hard going for a fatty like me, and my left knee today is shafted, feels like jelly above the kneecap and bruised even? Has anyone else had this happen? or is it something random I might have banged it without realising?
  • Are you clipped in?
  • strapped in.
  • i got shitty knees but i ain`t had that id go to a physio
  • I was just typing see a physio, so I'm seconding that advice.
Sports injury place at Hampden Park are good
  • Double check your saddle height, but seriously, pushing hard for 10 miles if you're not used to it = knee pain
  • Hampden Park ive been there they were good and got appointment fast
  • I cycle about 15 miles each day and usually hammer it, but usually in bursts of 3 miles at a time, I'll wait a couple of days, see what happens, if not I'll check out some physio places.
  • I also recommend the Hampden Park sports injury clinic.
  • I've got crap knees, used to get serious pain when bending after any lengthy ride, dropped my saddle 1cm and slid it back 1cm and my knees have been perfect ever since. so as above double check saddle height!
  • My saddle is at the right height I'm sure, I cant stand on the ground flat footed when seated got to tip toe to a degree, and its fully set back, so I can get the seat to feel right, might swap my saddle and see if its better adjustable. maybe more comfortable. I sometimes get a bit of strain if I've been pushing it, but not to when I stand up, it takes a few minutes to be able to walk properly. I'm sure its not too bad, but just a bit of a strain, Ill cycle moderately for the next few days and hope it sorts itself.
  • Saddle to ground height is not relevant, saddle to pedals is. Fore and aft saddle position is important too. Smaller gears and shorter cranks put less strain on the knee, there is loads of bike fit info to be found online and see a helth profesional if you wish.
  • I never understood how anybody thought that method of sizing is a good idea.
  • apparently should be a slight bend in the knee when the pedal is at the bottom of its turn. so basically when pedalling you should be almost fully extended.
  • Think it was that cycling proficency test you did at school. Never understand why people get on a bike and adjust the seatpost to that position.
  • The saddle position being back like that is so the saddle tilts to give me more support, otherwise, I go extremely numb in a bit I dont particularly want to go numb... an odd sensation I do say.... I will check my saddle height though as my legs are pretty long 36" inside leg so probably about 37" with shoes. Maybe thats the problem.. hmm

    ftfy

  • which translates to

when your foot is in the correct position and your leg is fully extended your heel should drop below the ball of your foot a wee bit.
  • Trust Sheldon (well, Keith Bontrager via Sheldon) to have something interesting to say:

Cheers for explaining, I'm going to check this out today, for some reason I can't think how straight my leg goes.
  • don't have it so straight that you are rocking your hips mind
  • Do you stretch before and after? I find that makes a big diffference to me. I do a 20 mile commute and by day 5 my legs do feel it. I find that over the subsequent days of rests best to have the occasional stretch just to keep em limber. If I don't I know about it basically!
  • The sports injury clinic in Hampden - is it expensive?
  • £35 a session I think.
  • Beware of leg straightness. Repeated locking and unlocking of the knee will quickly strain your popliteus muscle.

Now I can tell this is going to be rubbish, but does anybody have a picture of this? What is it? Is it better than my local cycling facility? (below)

  • It's kind of like a speed skating rink. Nice surface, velodrome lines marked on it, 3% banking(ish).
  • 550m as well I think.

Some times it has rollerderby girls on it.

Other times it has loads of footballers right in the middle.
  • Hell I'd go just to watch the derby girls

As for stretching I'd recomend doing that before any real periods of activity on a bike, loosens you up a bit I feel.
  • It's ok for cycling round, free from glass which is a bonus. There was a rollerblading girl there and a guy doing laps on a road bike with his 2 sons jogging it.

I and almost any coach i know would advise AGAINST stretching before you excercise.
  • Good thing I'm not a coach then isn't it all I know is that from my few years I done martial arts and my time in ice hockey it was alway opened with stretching, right or wrong its become habit and I never get on a bike without it.

Is there a time limit? ie, if I turn up and it takes more than an hour, do I need to come back again and pay another £35?
  • I've got an old knee injury that is worse when I'm exerting it too much, then I need to rest it for a day or two this is made worse by flat feet and I've had the bio mechanics of my walking assessed. Was thinking about getting my cycling biomechanics assessed too.

Found this place online might be worth a look.

  • That place looks quite interesting. My knee is ok mornings but deteriates through the day. I think I must have strained it, but not too badly, it mostly feels kind of warm.
  • If it's warm could be an infection, especially if getting knee pain after cycling isn't normal for you.
  • It's not warm like the way an infection heats up your skin, it's loads better today that I've not cycled. I think it just needs a bit of rest.

Sounds like a visit to the doctor is in order. Your story sounds like it warrants further investigation at least by your GP.

If demagawd has sore eyes, a burning sensation when urinating and is a mad shagger, this fits quite well.
  • Ha ha. If its still there by Tuesday I'll go to GP.
  • wooft rusty you don't pull your punches do you?

there is abolutely nothing wrong with that you just have the wrong bike!
  • Yeah, where is that? I think I might place an order with Archie Wilkinson and then head over there.

I didn't mean it to sound nasty or anything. I was more saying that if demagawd was thinking 'should I or shouldn't I' about going to the doctor that it's definitely a good thing to do, and not a waste of time.

    Cathkin park
  • I took no offence to it don't worry, I was kind of seeing if other folk had similar and it just went away type of thing. Its been fine today completely so I will cycle tomorrow as normal and see how it is, if it comes on again sore, then Ill head to my GP, if I can ever get an appointmet!

It does burn when I pee now though.... :/
  • Re Cathkin Park
I found the wee track at Cathkin just too small and prefered the 400m track around the football pitch, except winter or when its been raining when the surface turns to mush.
I stopped using Cathkin Park when I discovered that Hampden Park car park is 1km around the circumference, good tarmac, has lighting and is pretty quiet after 6ish.

I can't recommend them enough... that's another story... I'll post that in the battle scars thread!
  • ofcourse its to small, its a cycle speedway track its not designed for cycling round on a normal bike
  • Although someone trying to race round it in full lyrca on a road bike would be most amusing.
  • Ah! Hahaha.... then one night a good few moons ago if anyone was watching I was providing lycra-less amusement in blissful ignorance on my old faithful mtb!
I'm tempted to try it on the road bike now I have one, just for the fun of it!
