How many bikes do you own?
  • After recent conversations with friends aparently 5 complete bikes and 2 in bits is excessive. So I was wondering how many bikes do my fellow enthusiasts on this forum each own and what they are?
  • Three currently. Might go to four once I get a geared cross bike. Kinda fancy keeping the SSCX for the champs
  • 2 at the minute. A full sus mountain bike, a peice of shit Mongoose to tow a tag-a-long and soon to be singlespeed of some description. And a not very happy mrs :s
  • I own 5 at the moment but am on an ever lasting quest to get it down to one. Main bikes of choice are the kiddie carrier- a bastardised mountain bike with a cross bar seat and a trailgator with big highswept bars which I use to ferry the kids around. I use a car too. Then my fixed/ss depending what mood I'm in for most journey's or for going for a run. I've also got a geared mtb which hasn't been used in anger for years, a ss 29er mtb which has been used about 5 times and similarly not in anger for years and another old school mtb with a heap of now outmoded 'new' parts that has also seen little use. I use the ss/fixed primarily with 2 wheelsets with different tyres/cog/brake permutations. Geek? Me?!

I thought you could ride SSCX as long as you were locked into one gear.

As for me. Currently 3 with one frame lying in wait of funds and need to build. I'll build a track bike up for October when the velodrome opens but might give one of the other bikes the boot before then.
  • 3 and a frame and some parts... Gonna get shot of 2 of them and make a track bike for the Velodrome, if I can ever afford it.
  • although in our household we have 6 bikes.
  • 1 working (Armstrong fixed-gear conversion), 2 complete but not-working (Dawes hybrid single-speed conversion & Principia RSL road bike), 1 in pieces (Carlton waiting for fixed-gear conversion) = 4 total.
  • Track bunch race bike, track pursuit bike, Good road bike, winter bike, TT bike, interesting bike, street master, fixie and a mountain bike frame. So eight and a half really.
  • 3 - Bob Jackson fixed / SS for myself around town and shorter rides out of town, 1 Trek hybrid for load carrying or touring with family, 1 Audax bike for longer light touring stuff myself.

7 bikes in the household. Too many for a tenement flat.
  • 2 but ones in bits.

I belive the way to work out if what you have is to much is N+1 n standing for needed or something
  • N-4 + several options plus changing requirements of offspring in my case. Try to fit in every single bit you want to keep being incompatible with every bit you want to bolt it to. then start thinking about the kids bikes. this is for fun remember! Nobody I know actually takes this seriously and does training and diets etc. But yeah, you need to have a cull dude. So do I. Do you want to buy a ....!!!
  • I like the N+1 theory :)

    Currently have in working order:

    Flying scot (Dave Yates built)
Cinelli Gazetta (built with track in mind)
    Peugeot Elite single speed
    Dawes impulse
    Giant escape M1

    In bits:

Claud Butler enduro (future polo bike?)
Raleigh 531c special products division frame.

My argument is all have different purposes.

A cyclocross bike would see me happy and not requiring any more bikes.

Once I move back to Glasgow a cull will probably be required due to space :(

  • Yip, defo the answer. You need another bike to solve your growing bike dilemas! Ha Ha :\"> Just get one bike and make it do everything no? You need to sell all those lovely bikes first tho, then spend a lot of time and money on a bike that's so nice (to you - and probably only you!) that you're shit scared to leave it locked up outside anywhere for any amount of time. I am being a pedantic arsehole but there is some truth in it! I reckon you need working bikes and if you have a fight of fancy you can build up a nice flash bike which you won't ride much. It's nice to have tho and don't get me wrong, when you put it all together yourself and you get it finished - that's a good feeling. But I'm trying to be brutal and ask myself 'how often have I ridden that'. The moral is probably buy high quality out of fashion stuff. But who's going to do that eh?

Not the WCSSCX but the Scottish champs to have as a spare
  • I've always adhered to the n+1 theory too.
  • 4! plus multiple frames and many parts scattered around the workshop.

    fix-wheel road bike.
    Custom Singlespeed MTB.
    Custom Polo bike.
    Trials bike
  • 2.. my road bike and my in-bits mountain bike.

I'll own another bike by the end of the year, unsure if it'll be a cross bike/fixed gear/commuter utilitarian machine.
  • 5 at the moment, but wouldn't mind n+1 where 1=tourer or cyclocross....

Carrera Subway Alfine 8 speed - commuting & general use
Real Classic SA 3 speed - shopping and the park
Land Rover folding mtb - stick it in the boot for days out
Boardman SC Comp single speed - just for fun and bit of a workout
Decathlon btwin single speed - was the pub/spare bike

Was trying to reduce the numbers until I managed to get some cheap storage!
  • Where do yez find the time to ride all of these? Jealous tho.

I have 2 having just acquired the 2nd. Both fixed! Plan is to use my present bike as my winter warrior with the new one for April - September.

This thread would be cooler with pics.

  • Velominati have an interesting take on the n+1 theory

"While the minimum number of bikes one should own is three, the correct number is n+1, where n is the number of bikes currently owned. This equation may also be re-written as s-1, where s is the number of bikes owned that would result in separation from your partner."

    For me it's:

    Trek road bike
    Peugeot Clubman converted to fixed
Some unknown french frame that's a bit beaten up with some other parts that will eventually become a hack.

  • 4
i run one to three bike depending on the season
    1 moutian bike for winter/injury
    1 fixied wheel for shopping/raining
1 geared bike i can lock outside/for anything good if fixed has puncture
    1 nice geared bike
  • s-1 bikes, currently.

Hard tail mountain bike, polo bike, BMX, single speed. The Mrs has a mountain bike.

If I could afford one I'd like a nice, light, geared road bike, but there's no longer any room in our flat. I'd also be in big trouble.

Forgiveness is easier to get than permission
  • This, I can confirm.
  • 3 - fixie, polo bike and weird chopper project
  • My Peugeot conversion
My colnago project - frame and gruppo, needs the rest
    Have a raleigh shopper
and an old Peugeot MTB which I might try to make into a Polo bike. The girlfriend wont allow me to bring it to the flat though.

    As requested.

    This is my bicycle corner.

    image

As to when i find time to ride them all, I usually manage at least half an hour a day on one of them.

Cinelli Gazzetta and Flying Scot only in good weather only.

Dawes impules, Peugeot Elite SS, when weather is not so good or there is a chance ill have to lock it up unattended.

Giant Escape M1for anything other than road.

  • Wow! Impressed!
  • BAD or bicycle acquisition disorder is making victims here.
I've got one and it doesn't work. sad panda..

Also I've just donated my scrap to the bike station.

    In bits

    Does a ski bike count?

Mrs Getafix has a couple and I think my boy has 3 and girl has 2.

Looking at this list I think I/we should downsize.
  • This is a public service announcement. You downsize , i upsize. win-win you see.
  • I absolutely love that cervelo, Rusty. It's just so offensively expensive looking. True Porn
  • Price to me = £0

    :)
  • Just going to be really different here and say how many I have.

1, because that is how many bikes one can ride at the same time. :P
  • Rusty - £0>!!? lol

you'll never be a proper cyclist

Brother's old TT bike. Non-replaceable rear derailluer hanger snapped. Useless to him. He gave the frame to me.
  • A fixed Flying Scot, a fixed Genesis Flyer, a geared On-One Pomp and a geared Dahon Jack folder so...4.
