Moscow to California
  • Weather's looking like this might be possible on Saturday and I've fancied riding from Moscow to California for ages, should be do-able in three hours at most.

Route here: http://g.co/maps/5t2nv - subject to a bit of change

Train from Central to Kilmarnock 0912 gets there 0949
Train back from Falkirk High or ride back along the canal if energy / weather / time allows.

I'll be fixed, and taking it relatively easy pace-wise, with a pint anytime after half way definitely on the agenda.

Subject to cancellation if forecast turns worse but II'll probably still ride if showery. PM, text (numbers thread) or reply below if you want to join.
  • i'd love to do this, but i'm away at atp this weekend. i'll be up for it next time for sure.
  • I'd love to give this a go one day. Busy the next few weekends though.
  • Strong maybe.
  • Strong maybe.
  • Do two strong maybes make a definite Yes?
  • Gaargh! It all hinges on a number of factors.
  • Fantastic idea! I would love to do this! I work Saturdays though. :-(

Do it on a Sunday and I am there!

I've ridden a lot of that route a few times before and there is some very nice riding to be had. Definitely fixed-gear friendly too.
  • I'd love to do it on a Sunday but I am committed this Sunday to the Aberdeen v Motherwell game. More the merrier though, love the idea of cycling from Moscow to California in a few hours and have been meaning to do this for ages.
  • I don't think that the weather is scheduled to be too clever this weekend, but, even if you do it this Saturday, I'd still be interested in doing it on a Sunday in a few weeks or whatever when anyone is free...
  • I'd possibly be up for this in a few weeks time as the route ends a couple miles from my house.
  • I'm upgrading to an extreme possible. I'll be geared though.

not fancy schmancy carbon geared i'll go slow i promise.
  • I don't want to hold you up so if you confirm and there's nobody else on fixed I can go geared too, my tourer deserves a run out.
  • reckon i can be put down as a maybe.
  • OK, I'll text you both tomorrow teatime to confirm.
  • hi chaps. i live near glenmavis. what time d'ya reckon you'll be passing there? could hand a wheel for the last 15 miles if im allowed out! :-)
  • *heads off to re-check route*

Umm, half elevenish at earliest I'd say. Text when you get up or when you know if you can join, my number's in the phone numbers thread.
  • ok mate. i'll text you later - need to ask permission - you know how it is lol!
  • Tempted...
  • Give in to it! Weather's looking good, riding will be good, early beer and back here for mid afternoon, what's not to like?
  • pre ride coffee somewhere nearby?
  • i'm in either way :)

as for fixed/geared ride what you want i'm not aiming for a speed ride, especially if pasthalfway[ints are involved.
  • I'm now tempted by this also.
  • I'm tempted too but I'll have the kids in the morning, I think the best hookup point for me would be Glenmavis too. If I can get there 11:30ish I'll try.
  • I need to be back for 4pm. What time do you expect to be in Moscow? I'm thinking about riding out there instead of getting the train.
  • Last comment on this before I go out to build the hangover I'll be getting rid of tomorrow. Definitely going ahead with this, I'll be at the Hope St side entrance of Central around 10 to 9, I'm doing it fixed on a dirty Bob Jackson. Rusty, I'll text you. Euan, I'd hope to be back comfortably before 4 by train from Falkirk High, maybe slightly later if we ride back along the canal, or starting from Moscow around half ten, depends how quickly I find my way out of Kilmarnock. Organisation, eh? There's nothing like it.
  • Have fun! Ride safe! Really sorry to have to miss this. :-(
  • I'll see youse at Moscow for between ten and half past ten then.
  • have a good one lads. if i can wangle it i'll get to glenmavis for 11.30. if not, get stuck in!
  • I've just finished putting on a big boy chainset in preparation for tomorrow. I got your text @adonymous. I was in the pub so couldn't be bothered replying. Best just to meet at Central as you say.

  • Few pints last night = sore head this morning. Still on though
  • mild hangover, bring it
  • I'm sitting at delice de France with a coffee, croissant and muffin. Giving the Saturday AM crowd a wee flash of Lycra.
  • Sooooooooo tired!
  • hey rusty youve got that px looking really sweet :-)
  • (one hot bath later)

Cheers for that gentlemen, company made the ride so much nicer and enjoyed the pints after and journey home too.

If anybody else fancies doing this at some point, two words of advice:

    1) Change the route above and avoid everything between Hamilton and Glenmavis, much nasty speedy traffic including a fair few lorries which is best avoided when you're slowly hauling yourself up a long hill.

    2) Only a fool would do it fixed when you have the option of a geared bike.
  • coming into coatbridge was among the scariest twenty minutes of my life!
  • +1

On the whole though a lovely 73 miles for me.
  • lol! i saw your route went up the bellshill bypass. hardcore lads ;-)
  • I kicked off a bit after that. Rusty and his fucking Garmin!
  • I kicked off for 4 miles.
  • sorry i didnt make it. slept in :\">
but im up for it on Sunday if the riders that werent free on Saturdays fancy re-tracing the route without the nasty bits

I ride this probably every day of the week just about...

  • nutter :-)
  • I'll probably die there eventually, right enough.
  • Bikes should actually be banned on that stretch of dual carriageway.
  • Hmmm, it's not that bad, I was playing for dramatic, maudlin effect with my previous comment.
  • Alex cycle it when we did...

It was that bad, it was stupid, more than once i was less than a foot away from being smacked by an HGV doing 60miles an hour.
