Cold & Dark Ride II // Tuesday 8th November 2011
  • It's getting to that time of year where the cold and the rain are here a lot more than the light is. It's not all bad though. There's plenty of enjoyment to be had in these conditions. I propose an evening ride to take in this beauty.

    Tuesday 25th October // 6:30pm
Meet: Big Slope [ location ]
    Distance: 27.6 miles [ route ]
Bike: Fixed or Geared [ though note the distance and timing ]
Lights: Essential [ to illuminate and not just to be seen ]
    Mudguards: Preferable [ it's only polite ]

NB: This is not in the Fixed Beer thread because it's really not in the spirit of Fixed Beer (though a few pints in the pub afterwards are to be expected)
  • i'm in, so long as my knee holds out. :)
  • I've never enjoyed riding unlit country roads in the dark, finding it rather stressful and dangerous feeling, mainly because of being unavoidably dazzled by every oncoming car. I'm open to possible persuading on the joys though...
  • My light is pretty shite though :(
  • You could borrow one of my lights off Josh. Just make sure he charges it up first.
  • sweet, cheers dude.
  • bikely isn't loading for me. What's the route?
  • In on the 'bent. Have a decent exposure light I can lend out as well, if anyone needs it. Also having problems with bikely...
  • This sounds fun, hopefully free that night.
  • Route is Byres Road->Maryhill->Milngavie->Strathblane->Lennoxtown->Torrance->Bishopbriggs->West End.

I could be in, depends on how I feel after racing at Mugdock

Only suggestion is to avoid Springburn Rd after Hawthorn St. Can be pretty sketchy especially in the dark with a bunch of guys bolting it down the road.
  • Ok. We can sort the route back on the night.
  • this sounds fun, but i've a concert to go to that night. enjoy the ride!

I can understand this. however, with a sufficiently bright light the cars will dip for you, and you can see the road surface too. There's always a speed at which it becomes alarming, especially unknown downhills and even the best lights can't see round corners!

I think it's an absolute joy, as the few cars around are visible from miles away so no suprises. plus they can see your lights well in advance. It's quite a thrill and can feel very remote compared to the daytime!

I'd love to do an overnight ride to the coast in scotland, a la dunwich dynamo.
  • ^^^ Totally agree. A peaked hat also helps, you can dip your head using the peak as a blinker as a car is approaching.
  • I might not be able to make this now. tryouts for University Challenge that night.
  • oh aye. The genius here ^
  • So whos making this tonight? weather looks agreeable.
  • give you guys a wee heads up, had the day off and was out towards that direction yesterday.. went over the crow and back round Killearn. The roads from Strathblane to Clachan of Campsie was fucking filled with mud and leaves.. almost went down twice.

if it rained last night it might be cleaner.. but i'd be cautious especially in this section due to tractors using it and the trees. Other than that the roads out there were in great nick and rolling really smooth :)

I cant make it as i have a weights session at the gym and have nae lights nor mudguards... enjoy though.
  • I'm out as well due to only having two halves of a front brake cable until I can get back home. Respect to those who safely get around with only rear wheel braking, did not enjoy the second half of this morning's commute...
  • slept in
  • Well, for those how missed it/couldn't be bothered, myself, NiallC and Robbie from the Bike Station had a fantastic ride, weather was perfect, roads were quiet and the pints afterwards were divine. Cheers guys, let do this route again some time?
  • Dry and pretty still, you couldn't get a better autumnal evening - I'm in for more rides like that.
Final route was pretty much as Rusty posted, but cutting out a bit toward the end.
  • I qualified for the final selection round of the glasgow uni university challenge team do I'm happy :)
  • ^^^Brainbox.

You are sooo fucking cool, when i grow up i wanna be just like you! :)
  • Good luck rusty. In my opinion (biased), being on University Challenge is pretty damned cool... ;-)

    Glad the ride went well.
  • The concept of someone who entered HIMSELF into a male beauty pageant judging someone attempting to get onto university challenge to be uncool is hilarious
  • ^^ I was being sincere ye dick! All i ever want is for people to accept me for my whats on the inside, not just my stunning good looks and amazingly chiseled features!! :p
  • Anyone up for this again this week. I've got my new 1200 lumen light and want to give it a go in the dark.

  • na mate, gonna be on university challenge that night :(
  • looks like you found another excuse to get out of this ride eh Rusty!! :)
  • That's just what I was thinking!
  • If anyone else is still keen, I'm in for a ride. Unless the weather gets horrible before tomorrow night.
  • I'm tempted, but will have to see what tomorrow brings before i can decide.
  • Would also be up for it so long as this fog shifts
  • i could be interested in this too. depends on whether i get out of work in good time or not...
  • Based on BBC's optimistic forecast of no drizzle until 2100, I'll be outside Big Slope at half six on the recumbent. Hoping someone else turns up who knows the planned route...
  • i'm probably gonna have to duck out of this. 5pm meeting makes it unlikely that i'll be out of work and home in time. enjoy the ride.
  • I'm defo out, shame, i really enjoyed the first one.
  • Grand, see you there Rob.
  • On train back from work, should still be there for 1830. My mob number is the last one in the numbers thread, but I will be there!
  • Another nice night for some winter miles, cheers Rob.
This evening I learned that fixed gears and recumbents go at totally different speeds if any form of climb / descent is involved.
  • Very pleasant, even the rain held off. And yeah, long steady climbs waste all the aerodynamic goodness of a recumbent and just leave you in a fairly inefficient climbing position with a heavy bike... Must train harder!

Be game for making this a regular slot, maybe with a couple of different routes?
