Saturday Morning Ride Club
  • The way out was fine. Nice hills. Maybe a bit too much wind but the way back was brutal. The rain didn't bother me too much until I got to Glasgow where it was awful but that wind! 64 miles in all with 4hr 50m riding time. I think my 13.1mph average was quite good considering the 8mph 'limp-home'. I wont be rushing out to do so many miles on another day like today.

Merak and johnnyhotdog - well played!
  • The profile and stats from today's gentle run out:)

  • Well done y'all. Good work. No more 'mice' insults from me from now on...

nice work - i meant to ask what GPS you are using......it's a toy i'd like for that exact reason. that average speed isn't too bad considering the wind on the way back!

i should point out, i had an extra 30 miles on that.......... :-( but actually :-)

i'm so seized up it's untrue!
  • Yeah to be fair you guy's had a bit more mileage than me. Johnny in particular:) and with no lights! Sir, I salute you.
Fair play to you both, that was a painful day in the saddle.
My GPS is good in as much as its a totally wireless speedo. You can upload your journeys to motionbased and stuff which is quite handy, the figures don't lie!
Got it for £50 from Halfrauds last summer, which I thought was a touch.
Everyone up for the same again tomorrow? *goes off to whimper*

Nah, I'm going for something less painful tomorrow and I don't mind admitting it. I'll probably chew tinfoil whilst rubbing my head with a cheesegrater.
  • Ha, I lol'd:)
  • Where did you hit the 40mph maximum?

johnnyhotdog: nigh on 80 miles!? Ride on!
  • I was 37mph max and it was coming down a big hill on the way out. It would have been faster if I hadn't been holding back because of the wind. I think I'm going to go for 50mph down there on a nice calm day.
  • So you guys were riding geared, or have you got properly whirrlygig legs? Respect due either way for that distance on such a day.
  • The Saturday Morning Ride Club is having a winter suspension until the weather gets back to being cold and dry. I don't currently have the inclination to commit myself to a weekly Saturday morning ride. I'll be replacing the Saturday morning ride with turbo sessions throughout the week until the weather changes.
  • good call - i'm going out tonight (i don't normally go out on fridays) so wouldn't be in a fit state to ride tomorrow. i hope..........
  • This weekend marks the beginning of March and so the Saturday Morning Ride Club will be restarting (even though Saturday is still February). The meeting place is now changing to Royal Exchange Square. This is partly due to it being a bit smaller than George Square so people should be easier to find and partly due to the fact that I would like to get a quick espresso down immediately prior to leaving.

As for the cycling aspect of it rides will be out into the country, or at least close to it, with the most common ride being a ride to Eaglesham and back (20 miles) with the option to do the Eaglesham Moors Road (30 miles). I'll usually be doing this on my geared bike fully clad in lycra. This Saturday I'll be doing a longer route which I haven't decided on yet but it's likely to be about 50 miles going through Strathaven and onto Kilmarnock if anyone is up for it. There are, of course, plenty of opertunities to turn back so if anyone wants a 20 mile cycle then it's easily accomodated with you finding your own way back into Glasgow (this is very easy, just follow the A77 road all the way)
  • There are some interesting cycling photos from George Square here

that route sounds brilliant - you'll also pass my house.

sadly, i'm off out disco dancing on friday night so will be unable to attend as i'll be broken.
  • Time for me to start grumbling about working on a Saturday all over again.

    fake blood?
  • it was a hard decision but my friend euan is DJing at the southern comfort night before mylo and then i have another friend who's putting on an italo night with heartbreak in stereo so that's my plan so far.

i'd like to go to fake blood but i think two clubs in one night is enough!

are you off to see fake blood?

  • im up for a spin on saturday morning if i wake up
  • Good ride this morning. 50 miles in total. Down to Newmilns and back. The wind was against us on the way down (13mph not an uncommon sight) but on the way back we were flying (28mph on the flats). Enjoyed a slice of cake and an americano in a nice café in Newmilns. They're very friendly out in the country (usually).
  • does anyone fancy a SMRC ride this weekend? I'd be up for it- i haven't done anywhere near enough miles recently - i'm getting slow, unfit and fat.
  • i've just noticed you rode out to newmilns a few weeks ago- that's where i live. If i'd been at home you could have come round for tea and carbs!
  • It was a nice ride. I'd be up for a Saturday Morning Ride this weekend. If it's just us we could perhaps meet at the corner of Kilmarnock Road and Merrylee Road.
  • I'm in for the 21st March - the weekend after this one - as I have the weekend off to go to the Instal festival.

excellent - i'll be riding out from the west end so i'd be happy to meet you anywhere.
  • Royal Exchange Square then.
  • okay - how does ten o'clock sound?
  • Yarp. Will you be fixed or geared? I wouldn't mind a little fixed run.
  • I can be fixed if you like. I'll be lycra'd though :-)
  • If I wake up then I'll come out fixed.
  • List time!

Fixed and lycra'd is great for me.
  • well, i've just had a phonecall and i'm afraid i'm having to go back to work at short notice.....tomorrow.........so i'm afraid i can't make it. sorry! i was really looking forward to a nice ride too.

(i'll be seeing cuppa t this afternoon to give him some tyres so i'll pass on the stickers to him for distribution.)
  • That was quite quick. Ah well, we'll see you in a couple of months.

Aye. Talk about short notice. I may manage a weekend off here and there so i'll keep a look out for SMRC fixtures. See you in the summer!
  • Is the SMRC on tomorrow? I'd be fixed and not looking for anything overly savage. Reading the above posts made my knees somewhat weak.
  • I've got to help my brother out with his bike at 10:00am so I'll have to give this a miss today. Sorry. Next week.
  • What's the script with the Sat morning meet? Distance, numbers etc? How much danger is there of me being totally humiliated thru utter lack of fitness/technique?

    EDIT: Moved - rusty
  • There hasn't been any Saturday morning rides for a while. I'm out until my exams are over but from the end of May onwards there will be more. In the winter we usually had 3 or 4 people out every few weeks riding about 20 miles. The pace wasn't too fast either. With that few people it's not difficult to alter the pace. After the Loch Lomond ride quite a lot of us are up for more long rides so the summer should see a few longer rides happening.
  • I'd like to do this, fo' sho'. Especially if the sun's shining. And 20 miles sounds perfect for a saturday morning. What time do you tend to finish? I quite often have to be at a game by 3.
  • I'm usually home by 1200-1300 and I live miles away.

We normally meet for ten and set off by twenty past at the latest - Eaglesham Moor seems to be the standard route but hopefully with some new people we can have some variation.

I'd quite like to organise a 'Saturday Morning Series' during the summer. 40 mile out and back rides leaving from George Square. All inclusive, different every week.
  • Cool. Well, at the moment the forecast is pretty sound for Saturday...

If I'm around, you can count me in.

I can see some trips to the seaside coming on too. Ride out, eat ice-cream, drink beer, play frisbee, get the train back? Maybe some more Loch Lomond type outings?
  • I'v not been asked to wrk this Saturday yet so id provisionally be in for a ride this Saturday.
I reckon id be pretty slow though and il no be lycraing up or anything!
  • I think more loch lomond type rides is a good shout, mostly cos i missed it. tho i wont be free for many of them, i intend on comming whenever i get the chance.... is there going to be a ride on saturday the 25th? I think im free, and so is the Demo madone 5.2in my size I believe.....

  • This Saturday I'm off round the Dunoon loop, just over 100 miles. Up the lochside, Arrochar, Rest and be thankful, Cairndow, St Catherines, Strachur, Dunoon, Gourock and home.

Will be passing the north side of the Erskine bridge 9am on Saturday, you are welcome to join in!

If you do it fixed I will be very impressed! :)

    Toodle pip.
  • Welcome back Merak. I thought you'd left us for good. The loop sounds good. I might be up for it on the geared bike. Any chance of a rough map?
