Saturday Morning Ride Club
  • I'm due a tax rebate and have decided that one of the things I'm going to fritter it away on is a geared bike. I've been using my brothers bike since he got it in the summer but I've been wanting to get my own for a while. I propose that we organise a saturday morning geared ride out to the south-west. I'd not be up for anything until I get the bike but after that I'll be heading out weekly on a saturday regardless of who's coming but it would be good to make it a social thing.

Those of you living out in that general area could either make it a shortened ride or a lengthened ride but meeting us en-route or cycling in to Glasgow before heading back out. More detailed organisation can be done closer to kick-off.
  • i, sir, am in. when i'm at home, obviously.
  • I'd be up for it... Since I can't get a Pista through the Cycle2Work scheme I'm getting a roadie... On a side note... Anyone got recommendations for a roadie at about £500..? Was looking at a Trek 1.2 but don't fancy the 09 paint job...
  • I've heard good things about the Specialized Allez
  • It looks like I might have a very rare Saturday off in the next couple of weeks, in which case I'd be up for a ride. What kind of distance were people thinking of? I either have my SS Dawes if the weather is bad, which would limit my speeds, or if it's guaranteed good weather I can use my Principia RSL (it's way too fancy if there's even a hint of dodgy weather though).
  • I was thinking 25-30 miles.
  • Cool, sounds good to me - I can use either bike for that kind of non-epic distance.
  • Today Goose and I cycled into Eaglesham and up one of the big hills there as a short fixed ride. It took just over an hour in total and covered 18 miles. Is anyone up for making this a weekly endeavour at least until I buy my geared bike. We could start and finish at George Square to be more inclusive.

The next outing will be leaving at 10:00am (aim to arrive by 9:50am) on Saturday 22nd November from George Square.

The idea is that the ride should be done fixed but single-speed is fine and, if you must, gears are permitted. The ride should work out at just over 20 miles leaving from George Square. We will operate a no-one gets left behind policy.
  • i'll do it if we can stop for a flask of tea half way around

Bring a thermos of tea or Heinz soup with you and crack it open at the top of the hill in Eaglesham.
  • count me in for saturday the 13th december.

  • I'm only very rarely off on Saturdays, but any time I am I'll definitely be up for this. Sad that I'll be missing it.

with 150 folk from London, you probably read about it on the london forum!
so that route then direct back to hackney which is almost the starting point again.... good bloody fun!
  • That sounds and looks amazing. I had a read of the londonfgss thread and it seems like there's already some photos up: http://www.flickr.com/photos/booksnake/sets/72157609153898440/
That's a hell of a lot of cyclists, let alone all fgss. Awesome.
  • Awesome. I think Clyde bridges would be a bit of a rubbish ride. Maybe worth doing though at some point. 10 points for the kingston bridge.
  • There would be a nice stretch between the millenium / bells bridges and the erskine bridge though

The traffic would slow the ride up quite a bit though. Does Clyde bridges include the Erskine bridge?
  • there is no such thing as traffic if you can get 150 folk and do it at night
  • the erskine bridge is open to bikes and is a pretty amazing view, the kingston bridge is all motorway so no bikes.

you could include the clyde tunnel as well

Beware the gangs of neds though!

It's not the safest/nicest place at night, though with enough numbers I'm sure we could handle them.

    Hence the 10 points ;)
  • Goose and I will be at George Square from 9:50am until 10:00am tomorrow morning if anyone is interested in the ride.
  • Grumble, grumble, moan, grumble... working as always... moan, grumble, moan, moan...

Have fun y'all. Make sure to wrap up warm, or ride hard, probably both.
  • Unfortunately due to a last minute commitment I can't do today anymore. Apologies to anyone who's going to be there.
  • didn't really want to start a new thread for this... however, its a nice thing to read...

  • Today I went for a ride with Good and my brother (both on geared bikes) into Eaglesham and around the surrounding countryside.

Along one country lane I heard a clattering behind me. When I looked around I saw Goose and my brother on the deck after slipping on some ice. The moment I turned back around I was on the deck. I must say that having your wheels taken from beneath you is a very surreal experience. Only slight cuts and scrapes all round.

I hope more people can join us next week.
  • 70 miles down the coast for me today. Absolutely freezing, snow storm at Largs great!

I will keep my eyes peeled for your next Saturday run. I will be along on the geared winter bike, getting the miles in now :)
  • Meant to say. Rubbish about your tumble hope you and your bike are okay!:)
  • I'm heading out soon for a quick pre-work ride this morning and am going to have to be pretty cautious I think. Sticking to main roads only though, so hopefully it won't be too hair-raising. Got me a little worried though now.

Glad that your falls weren't nasty rusty & co., battle scars can be something to be proud of, perhaps...
  • This morning my left hip, shoulder and elbow were killing me. I had to sleep on my right side last night.
  • Is there a run tomorrow?
  • Hopefully so. I quite fancy it. Not been out on the bike much lately and I'm missing it. Weather is looking good as well.
  • I was thinking about not doing a run tomorrow after last weeks slidey experience but having looked at the forecast for tomorrow and after todays mild weather I think a ride would be a good idea.

Tomorrow. George Square. 9:45am for a 10:00am departure.

Anyone who's going to be there please post so that we know to wait for you.
  • Whats the route?
  • This is the route. There's scope for more length at Eaglesham but tomorrow I've got to go to Dundee in the afternoon so I'll not be doing any extra. 20 miles all in.
  • Be careful this morning folks. It's dropped well below freeing again (-1.8C right now) with a definite frost and with the wet roads from yesterday it could be a bit slippy out there. Take care.

I'll be in the shop as ever, so won't be attending, unfortunately.
  • Bugger. -3ºc is the low for today with a high of 7ºC and what temperature is it now? -3ºC. We'll be keeping to main roads with the normal route but if others want to adventure further then it'll be a risky one.
  • Mostly a good ride. I had to give up because I had overdressed and was over heating on the hills. Nice ride on the way back.
  • I enjoyed it also. 20 miles all in for me with an average speed of 14.5mph. I think that includes walking around George square and rolling up to lights. Same agan next week if anyone's interested.
  • I'm game after the 15th has passed (exams).
  • Good stuff. Always good to have more people. Fixed, single or geared if I may ask.
  • i shall be there next week. should i come fixed or geared?
  • Up to you really. I go fixed. My brother goes geared. If Angus is out he'll probably be geared because his fixed is still broken.
  • i might come also....
  • It'll depend on how bad the weather is......dry and sunny will mean gears probably and wet and miserable will mean fixed.........i'll come fixed......i'm looking forward to this - it'll be cool to get something regular happening.
  • wat route are you guys taking and were do use meet up im pretty intrested in this.
  • This is the route. We meet at George Square. On Saturday we found each other in George Square but in future I think we should meet at the north-east corner (George Street & North Frederick Street)
  • cool never been to eaglesham before, is there anything super exciting there? haha
i might be fixed for next sat aswel so it would be fun.
